The Muncie 4-speed manual transmission holds a significant place in automotive history, renowned for its robust design and pivotal role in the performance car era. Developed by General Motors (GM), the Muncie transmission became an icon of muscle cars during the 1960s and early 1970s, leaving an indelible mark on the automotive landscape.

In 1965, GM introduced an even more robust version of the Muncie transmission, known as the M22 or "Rock Crusher." This transmission, with its distinctive whine, became synonymous with high-performance cars of the era. The M22 featured straighter cut gears, providing a more aggressive gear mesh for increased strength and durability. The Rock Crusher earned its name from the audible noise it produced, resembling the crushing of rocks, and it quickly gained popularity among drag racers and street racers alike.
